  1. Hello, I keep getting asked to install the security update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB956390) but it always fails and my antivirus program continues to show that there is an update that hasn’t been installed.
    Is it an important update?
And if it isn’t how do I get rid of this notification?
    Thank you for your help
    jo

  3. Are you trying to install this manually or are you letting Windows Update do the install? If your doing it manually, confirm that your downloading and installing the correct update for your box (32bit vs. 64bit).

Let me know regarding the (Click on Shield or goto Windows Update Vs. Installing Manually).

  5. I finally found the update myself on the website and installed it manually. As long as I was letting windows update do it for me it kept failing. So now it is installed at least. thanks for your help.

  7. Excellent and congrats! I’m glad it worked out for you!
    Also,
Just in case you hadn’t noticed (although I’m sure you did) each update here on microsoftPost.com contains a link to the link on the Microsoft Website. It’s labeled “Microsoft Download Link”. Anyway, glad to hear a SUCCESS story and WELCOME to the site ;)

  9. I have tried downloading the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB956390) manually and through automatic updates. Neither will work. What is the difference between 32bit vs. 64bit. How can I be sure which download to do correctly.

  11. I too am prompted to download this update which always fails. I tried to manually install but this failed too. The extracting of files failed.
I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3.

I have no idea how to get this to install.

  13. Kerry – I read there is a hotfix to this issue, where? Through all the jibberish of page after page of information on this and on that, I am not sure…One thing I read was to wait for the next hotfix to try this download (?). Personally, I am not comfortable with that. Why can’t they just say go here, do this and it be fixed? I don’t understand the complexity to all. I, too, have the XP Home Edition 2002, Serv.Pack 3.

  15. @Befuddled – Hey there. If your running XP Home, I’m going to guess your NOT running a 64bit (x64) version of XP. That being said, I could be wrong.

To Verify, take the following steps, Click Start, then Click Run. Type in sysdm.cpl and Click OK.

If your running a 64-bit version of XP, it should say something like: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version 2002.

Now, that being said please be sure you are trying to install the CORRECT version of KB956390. If your running a 32-bit version of XP and IE7, you should use the link HERE to download it:
    http://www.microsoftpost.com/microsoft-download/cumulative-security-update-for-internet-explorer-7-for-windows-xp-kb956390/

If it’s 64-Bit, use this link:
    http://www.microsoftpost.com/microsoft-download/cumulative-security-update-for-internet-explorer-7-for-windows-xp-x64-edition-kb956390/

The main thing to remember here is that the Patch is IE Specific AND 64-Bit vs. 32-Bit specific. So, you need to make sure your getting the right version of the patch.

If you DONT have IE7 (IE5 – IE6) then you need to get a different of the patch. Just search for the KB Article number above in the Search window and you can cycle through until you find the right one.

  17. @Kerry – Hi Kerry, same advice as my note above. Quick question for you. Are you able to install other patches and updates from the Microsoft Auto-Apdate / Windows Update? Or is this happening for ALL updates?

  19. I tried using the link that MrGroove listed for 32 bit and I got an error message. “Files from the package are incompatible with files on your system”

    Any suggestions?
